Week of January 15

Important Notes:

* Please look for books belonging to our classroom library and return them to school.  We are missing many books!

*Scholastic Book Orders are due on January 20th.  Online orders are the easiest way to do this!

Fifth Grade Homework:

*Read 30 minutes each night.  We have begun our author study on Jerry Spinelli, and kids are welcome to read their Spinelli books at home, or read other appropriate books of their choice.  I am tracking the reading, so reading logs are not necessary, other than notes on a bookmark or in the planner.

*NO SPELLING THIS WEEK!

*CHANGE IN SOCIAL STUDIES PROJECT: Only the FIRST "side" is due on Friday.  We have had so many snow days that I haven't been able to give as much time as I wanted for in-class work, so we are splitting them up.  Part Two will be due next week (January 26), and the dessert will be pushed back to February 2nd.

Fourth Grade Homework:

* Read 30 minutes each night.  We have begun our author study on JRoald Dahl, and kids are welcome to read their Dahl books at home, or read other appropriate books of their choice.  I am tracking the reading, so reading logs are not necessary, other than notes on a bookmark or in the planner.

*No spelling this week!

4/5 News

January 12, 2018: There is flu and pink eye in the school!

We just want you to be aware that they are here, and they are spreading.  We are doing our best to clean and encourage excellent hand hygiene in the classrooms, but kids are still getting sick.  Please be aware of the signs and symptoms of both flu and pink eye, and keep your kids home if in doubt!

Fifth Grade Note:

We just ended a terrific week with Mr. Ish from Hartford Stage, who introduced us to the book Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli, the author we study in fifth grade.  It's a terrific way to kick off our author study unit, and also to introduce the sometimes difficult topics of racism and ignorance.  Ask your kids to explain the difference between ignorance and stupidity!  The kids did an excellent job of talking through some tough issues, and they learned some theater techniques, as well.  Thanks for having such great kids!
